SNL Shakeup: Michaela Watkins and Casey Wilson Get the Axe

Adding two new women must have been an estrogen overdose for SNL. Comedy industry blog The Comic’s Comic reports that comediennes Michaela Watkins and Casey Wilson have gotten the boot from the show.
According to The Comic’s Comic,
“Michaela just confirmed this to me herself. So it looks as though Lorne Michaels hired Jenny Slate and Nasim Pedrad not as additional females to the cast (as SNL follower Rachel Sklar over at Mediaite would have hoped), but rather to replace Watkins and Wilson.”
Watkins and Wilson weren’t the strongest cast members on the show, but SNL’s calculus that “two new women = just as good as two other women” is a little troubling. Movieline’s quip about how both new cast members are “Casey Wilson doppelgängers” takes on an extra sting.
Still, you’ve got to give SNL some credit: if the news of the firings had leaked before news of the new hires, people wouldn’t have fully considered the merits of Slate and Pedrad, and the show would have come across looking even worse.
