The View Debates Timing of Potential Military Action in Syria After FBI Raid on Cohen: ‘Why Now?’

At the top of today’s broadcast of The View, the hosts debated the timing of any potential military action President Donald Trump would take against Syria and whether it would be tied to the recent FBI raid of Trump attorney Michael Cohen’s office.

Meghan McCain got things started by noting that Fox News host Tucker Carlson has said getting engaged in Syria following a recent chemical attack blamed on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would be catastrophic, adding that she personally believes it is America’s responsibility to get involved. This led to Joy Behar saying she was suspicious of the timing of military action now as she noted Barack Obama was accused of setting a red line in 2012 and not going into Syria later.

“It’s not a red line — it’s a fact,” McCain shot back, causing Behar to respond that there was also a chemical attack a year ago when Trump was president.

“Okay,” Behar stated. “Trump has had this whole year to do something. Why now?”

McCain pointed out that there had just been another recent chemical attack, leading Behar to acknowledge that while explaining that the Cohen news made her wary of any immediate moves surrounding Syria.

“I don’t want to get into Michael Cohen,” Behar declared. “I’m saying the seriousness of the situation within the house is interesting at this point, if he wants to do a wag the dog in Syria, let us be careful of the timing of this is all I’m saying.”

Eventually, the table got into a bit of a fiery discussion over the Obama red line, with Sara Haines noting that while Obama did draw a line over chemical weapons, he also went to Congress for military authorization and there was no appetite for it at the time. Sunny Hostin would go on to provide more explanation on why the president went to Congress in 2013.

McCain concluded by stating that there is a “huge fracture” in this country when it comes to military action abroad but that we are talking about genocide regarding Syria. As she said the Michael Cohen stuff isn’t going away, Whoopi Goldberg used that as a way to flip topics.
