TODAY Asks Why Serene Branson Wasn’t Sent To Hospital After On-Air Confusion

According to her Los Angeles television station, KCBS-TV, reporter Serene Branson is doing fine, thanks. But for California viewers who saw the reporter struggle through a Grammys liveshot Sunday night–and the thousands who watched it online afterwards–concern has focused on what might have caused a veteran reporter to become, momentarily, unable to form words. Many have suggested Branson may have suffered a stroke, or a seizure.

NBC’s TODAY asked a neurologist about the incident–a rare case where the incident was caught on tape–and then Matt Lauer sat down to talk about the case with NBC chief medical editor Nancy Snyderman. Snyderman immediately questioned the decision made to send Branson home after she was “checked out” by paramedics. “Not the right thing to do. You immediately go to the emergency room, because this can be the harbinger of more things to come.”

Snyderman says the reporter needs to be evaluated for the possibility of bleeding in the brain, a clot, or even a brain tumor.

So true- Paramedics cannot determine what was going on in her brain. This is a classic TIA- it goes away within 48 hours but you need to get scanned, get the cerebral arteries checked out- plaque can breakaway from an artery and cause temporary blockage of blood to the brain. And YES- you can return to normalcy after the attack but you need to determine what caused it.

She should have been sent ASAP. Time = brain tissue. The faster you treat a stroke the better the projected outcome.

Absolutely. It could be any number of things, several of which are easily fixed but will kill you if left untreated. It could also be nothing, but why take the chance? This gal needs to get her head checked, for real, ASAP.

Really? This is important? How many people don’t know that Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and defense spending make up 70% of the federal budget?

No amount of praying I’m doing for her can help if she won’t help herself. This could be a stroke or something serious. My 25 year old son had a stroke six weeks ago. He and his wife are trying to think of any signs that may have preceded the event. Other than a feeling of having a “stuffy’ head, which he ignored, there was nothing…except, for a few moments of lightheadedness which he admitted to during our annual Christmas dinner. Something happened with Ms. Branson. Perhaps her employer could tell her she won’t be permitted to go on air again until she is thoroughly examined by a physician. Somebody has to intervene, because this is no laughing matter.

She was not in position to make that call. If you suspect a stoke her boss on seen should have made the call to go to the icu. It’s on him not the person suspected of having a stroke.

i just can’t believe that she is not getting checked out. once she sees that video, she should be terrified! run, don’t walk serene, to the nearest hospital.

that was not normal. and you can see in the screen cap above, it does look like her face became temporarily slack.

my aunt had an aneurysm, one of my teachers, my friends sister both had one too, my BIL had a brain tumor….they were all relatively young. my uncle has a brain tumor now, and he has done this sort of gibberish thing… you can’t mess around with this kind of stuff.

What got me was a couple of twitter feeds that seemed to try to spin it into something else. One of them claimed there was an audio problem which is why her words sounded messed up and I’m thinking “BS, dude!”.

I hate that…don’t play us for stupid and try to pass if off as some sort of technical problem (you know…technology us little people wouldn’t understand).

The Grammys are making the news
    Because Arcade Fire and Muse
    Performed with panache
    And strobes with such flash
Serene Branson’s brain blew a fuse.

She is very very skinny and I heard through the grapevine from people who know her that she has high cholesterol. She has a difficult time keeping her cholesterol levels low even with prescription medication and diet together.I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out that her arteries are becoming clogged. I always thought she did not look healty but was told she kept a strict diet due to her cholesterol problelm. This mean a lot of fat free food.

It’s unlikely that a seasoned reporter (she’s won Emmys for her work) would “lose it” from sheer nerves, so that theory needs to be dismissed immediately. You can see the alarm on her face, as she is aware that she has lost control of her ability to speak (not all stroke sufferers will be aware that they’re not making sense).

That is classic dysphasia, i.e. difficulty speaking, a sign of reduced blood flow to areas of the brain. It can be from poor circulation to the parts of the brain that control the motor centers for the muscles involved in speech (tongue, palate, vocal cords, etc), or from the parts of the brain that translate thoughts into speak (speech association areas, e.g. Broca’s area). Coincidentally, that’s roughly the area of the brain that was damaged in Sen. Gifford, and hence why the doctors were so worried about her ability to speak.

Serene Branson needs to be evaluated ASAP, as those symptoms could only be the warning sign of a more devastating impending stroke that could kill her (or leave her a vegetable)….

When I see headlines that say “She didn’t have a stroke” it infuriates me. The reports don’t say that AT ALL.

What they say is her vitals were checked on scene and they were normal and was taken home by a friend. The following day Branson confirmed she went to the doctor for FURTHER TESTS. Have the results of those tests come back yet?? Not that have been reported. THOSE results will say whether she had a stroke (or mini-stroke aka TIA). Getting vitals checked tell you nothing about a TIA because the symptoms are TRANSIENT (DUH!). Saying she ‘feels fine’ now would be consistent with a TIA because the SYMPTOMS DISAPPEAR. HELLO, why is this hard to understand?

If the test results from her doctor come back and THEY say she didn’t have a stroke, then THAT is when the headline can read that she didn’t have a stroke. Why is this simple detail lost on people, even people writing these damn updates on her health???

EMT’s can’t DIAGNOSE these kinds of conditions. A quick check on heartandstroke.com will explain the tests needed to diagnose a TIA or full blown stroke and it requires a DOCTOR.

The shoddy headlines and half-assed updates only fuel the idiots online looking for an excuse to keep mocking her.

  • Blood sugar issue?

I had a similar episode once when I was pregnant because I skipped breakfast. It was caused by low blood sugar. I had a job answering phones, and I could form coherent thoughts but gibberish came out when I tried to speak.
