Watch SNL’s Tribute To Whitney Houston

Everyone at Saturday Night Live must have been as shocked as the rest of the world to get the news that Whitney Houston died today at the age of 48, only a day before she was supposed to appear at the Grammys, and when she was due at a party in just a few hours. Given the short notice, there wasn’t much time to prepare a proper tribute. Instead, they put up a still photo of Houston’s appearance on the show with Molly Shannon, who was in character as Mary Catherine Gallagher.

Should they have put up the photo at all? I think that they did the best they could under the circumstances, and seeing a photo of Whitney smiling and looking healthy on the show probably said more than a longer tribute would have.

They botched it. It’s almost like it dawned on someone to do it 5 minutes before it aired.

    that was really random

I could be wrong, but I think that tonight’s show was not actually live, but perhaps the taped dress rehearsal.     The final shot of the clock during the goodnights shows the time as 7 PM (last week’s episode reflected the actual time of 1 AM) so I’m wondering if the cast didn’t find out after the dress and simply not feel up to doing a show.    Still, they could have thrown the sketch in easily from the files.

Why not just replay her performance from the show in ’91?

it was odd to say the least, cause I paused it and went online which is why I’m here…

Give SNL a break. What do you expect them to do on four hours notice?!

How about nothing? Why is it on SNL to do anything? Think of all the musical acts and hosts they’ve had, how often do they acknowledge when one of them has died?

Maya Rudolph is set to host next week and there is NO WAY she wasn’t gonna do her Whitney Houston character (which i’ve always hated)

they may have decided to air the “tribute” so that they wouldn’t have to address houston’s death during Rudolph’s show, which could easily get really awkward.

What clock are you looking at? I double checked my DVR and the only clock I saw was the one at the very end and it clearly read 1 a.m.

Anyway, I seriously doubt the cast would have been that broken up

You have a direct line to what SNL is going to do, an uncredited producer perhaps?

More importantly, why is it “on” this news site to give a detailed synopsis of everything that happens on SNL? We’re not watching it for a reason.

People expected them to do a tribute? Really? She wasn’t an SNL “Family” member. It can be argued whether whe’s she’s truly a member of our “national family.” With so little information available it was problable best they didn’t wade too far into the pond. Her death touched our heartstings but everything in perspective.

What do you mean,  ”It can be argued whether whe’s she’s truly a member of our “national family.” ??

I haven’t watched SNL since the Chevy Chase days.

Yeah if you’re going to do a tribute, make it worthwhile- if SNL could shoehorn a still pic into the show at the last minute, they could have picked a nicer photo and perhaps a few words across the bottom- what they did the other night didn’t even rise to the level of ‘afterthought’
