‘You’re Babbling!’ O’Reilly Battles Mary Katharine Ham, Juan Williams over Legalizing Pot
Now that the War on Christmas™ is gone from the zeitgeist for the next eleven months, Bill O’Reilly decided to take up a whole new war on Monday night: the War on Drugs. Both Juan Williams and Mary Katharine Ham tried arguing the negative impact of the War on Drugs, but O’Reilly stood by his convictions and blithely dismissed both their arguments at different points.
Williams argued that arresting people for minor drug infractions is a serious issue; both he and Ham rolled their eyes when O’Reilly asserted users only get tickets. Williams argued that parents worry about this happening to their kids, which is why they might support safe and legal treatment of pot, to which O’Reilly responded, “I’m just gonna discount that argument, Juan.” Boom, just like that.
O’Reilly then made the more emotional appeal, asking Ham if she would want her baby to smoke pot when she’s older. Ham didn’t give O’Reilly the answer he wanted, and so they got into the following fiery exchange.
O’REILLY: “Answer my question!”
HAM: “No, I’m answering the question by saying it doesn’t have to be illegal because I can step in and handle things! And the fact is that freedom is far less likely to be damaging than paternalism and a nanny state!”
O’REILLY: “Mary Katharine, you’re babbling, you don’t want to engage in a conversation.”
HAM: “No, I’m saying clear words and making an argument to you.”
Ham also pointed out that whether marijuana is legal or illegal, it would be illegal to children either way, just like alcohol is now, so really, what’s the difference?
