CNN Refers To Osama Bin Laden as OBAMA Bin Laden In On Air Gaffe and Critics Immediately Pounce
Critics pounced on CNN after the network aired a graphic mistakenly connecting terrorist Osama Bin Laden to former President Barack Obama.
During a Friday report on CNN News Central, network anchor Boris Sanchez discussed the history of Guantanamo Bay noting President Donald Trump is sending illegal migrants to the facility, which once housed only terrorists.
Sanchez noted that a 2014 Senate report highlighted the torture of Bin Laden associate Abu Zubaydah. The torture included 80 instances of waterboarding, sleep deprivation, and more. Sanchez further reported that Guantanamo Bay held nearly 700 prisoners in 2003 at the height of the War on Terror – but had plenty of vacancies.
The segment was torpedoed by an onscreen graphic that read: “Obama Bin Laden associate” instead of “Osama Bin Laden associate.” Sanchez never actually said the former name, but the graphic remained up briefly as Sanchez reported:
“You might recall during this time the base was mired in controversy over questions of due process and allegations of torture. There was this Senate report back in 2014 that highlighted the interrogation techniques against an associate of Osama bin Laden named Abu Zubaydah. Zubaydah, excuse me. The Intel committee said that the experiences he had were awful. He had at least 83 applications of waterboarding, he spent over 11 days in a coffin sized confinement box, and was subjected to other interrogation methods like sleep deprivation. We should also note at least nine detainees have died while in custody at Guantanamo Bay. For years, human rights organizations have criticized the operations there. And at one point, Amnesty International called Guantanamo Bay the gulag of our time.”
Critics, mostly supporters of Trump and MAGA, ignored the other details Sanchez was highlighting about Guantanamo Bay’s controversial history to trash CNN over the gaffe. The network was mocked for the on-air gaffe as some questioned whether the mistake could be chalked up to them “throwing in the towel.”
