Canadian Prime Minister Cuts in to Fact Check Trump in the Oval Office

Newly-elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney cut into an Oval Office Q&A that saw President Donald Trump take up most of the air to fact-check his American counterpart on trade — as well as to emphasize that Canada would never become the U.S.’s 51st state.

After gesturing as though he were going to begin to speak, Trump urged Carney to “go ahead.”

“Yeah, if I may. Well I-, respectfully, Canadians’ view on this is not going to change — on the 51st state,” began Carney. “Secondly, we are the largest client of the United States in the totality of all the goods. So we are largest client of the United States. We have a tremendous auto sector between the two of us, and the changes that have been made have been helpful.”

“You know, 50% of a car that comes from Canada is American. That’s not like anywhere else in the world. And to your question about is there one thing [that can lower the tariffs]? No, this is a bigger discussion,” continued Carney. “There are much bigger forces involved, and this will take some time, and some discussions, and that’s why we’re here, to have those discussions, and that is represented by who’s sitting around the table.”

Trump went on to say that the negotiations between the two countries would be “very friendly,” as well as to continue to assert that America’s trade deficit with Canada means that the former is “subsidizing” the latter.

Carney’s fact check came after Trump stated, “We don’t do much business with Canada, from our standpoint. They do a lot of business with us. We’re at like 4%, and usually those things don’t last very long. You know, we have great things, great product — the kind of product we sell, nobody else can sell, including military.”
