Conservative radio star Erick Erickson panned President Donald Trump’s newly-announced trade deal with the United Kingdom on Thursday, deeming it “shitty.”

Trump announced that the United States and U.K. had reached an accord on Truth Social Thursday morning, writing:

he agreement with the United Kingdom is a full and comprehensive one that will cement the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom for many years to come. Because of our long time history and allegiance together, it is a great honor to have the United Kingdom as our FIRST announcement. Many other deals, which are in serious stages of negotiation, to follow!

The president followed that up with an Oval Office press conference that saw one British reporter ask if he was “overstating” the significance of the deal because he’s “a president who needs a result at a difficult time.”

“I think that it’s a great deal for both parties,” replied Trump. “We’re opened up. I didn’t know how closed it was. Quite closed, the market, as you know, the U.K. And it opens up a tremendous market for us, and it works out very well, very well.”

But Erickson doesn’t see it that way.

“It’s actually a pretty shitty deal with the UK,” wrote Erickson on X. “First, they told us the 10% tariff was just a baseline for negotiations to get to free trade deals. Now we’re being told the 10% tariff is for keeps. That’s just a tax on the American people.”

Erickson also shared a criticism of the deal made by conservative economist Joel Griffith, who argued that “Tripling our tariffs to 10% on UK imports is hardly a win for the American people— and it’s hardly reciprocal, at > 5x the UK’s level. This so-called trade deal is a multi-billion $ tax hike. And nationalizing (socializing) British Steel at Trump’s behest is hardly free market.”

“Dirty little secret is many of the suddenly loud pro-tariff voices don’t like them, but want to be seen as team members and are mad at the rest of us for not joining them in lying,” added Erickson in a subsequent tweet.
