Just hours after Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced he won’t be running for reelection in 2026, one notable Fox News host seems poised to throw her hat in the ring.
According to Vaughn Hillyard of NBC and Reese Gorman of NOTUS, Fox News host Lara Trump — the daughter-in-law of President Donald Trump — is “strongly considering jumping in the race.” An unidentified source told Hillyard that it’s all but a done deal that Lara Trump runs — and if she does, it would effectively clear out the Republican primary field.
“I’d put it as high as one could be considering it … The race will be over before it begins,” the source told Hillyard.
Lara Trump has flirted with Senate bids several times before. In 2020, she said she would consider running in North Carolina, before opting against a run a year later. Then, in 2024, she was among the contenders to replace Marco Rubio as one of Florida’s senators — but ultimately withdrew from consideration before announcing the launch of her Fox News show My View with Lara Trump.
Trump – late Saturday prior to the announcement from Tillis — teased that several interested parties were looking to mount a primary bid against the incumbent.
“Numerous people have come forward wanting to run in the Primary against ‘Senator Thom’ Tillis,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I will be meeting with them over the coming weeks, looking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina and, so importantly, the United States of America.”
But the president gave no indication that his daughter-in-law might be among those looking to run.
