GOP Senator Tries — and Fails — to Get Fauci to Stop Pleading the Fifth Before Accusing Him of Money-Making Scheme

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) tried getting Dr. Anthony Fauci to not plead the Fifth Amendment on Wednesday by asking him a series of basic questions.

Fauci testified before Congress a few days after his 2020 diary entries were released to the public. During Wednesday’s hearing, the former Chief Medical Advisor to the President was relentlessly grilled by Republican members of Congress for his guidance during the Covid-19 pandemic. In response to all of their questions, Fauci simply declined to answer by pleading the Fifth.

When it was Hawley’s turn to question him, he decided to test Fauci’s commitment to the Fifth Amendment strategy by asking him a series of harmless questions. The exchange went as follows:

HAWLEY: Well, nothing says honesty like taking the fifth, huh, doc? Let’s try something. What day of the week is it today?

FAUCI: On the advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer based upon my rights under the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution.

HAWLEY: What color tie are you wearing?

FAUCI: On the advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer based upon my rights under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.

HAWLEY: What color is the carpet in front of you?

FAUCI: On the advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer based upon my rights under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.

Moments later, Hawley claimed Fauci didn’t want to answer questions because he “did all kinds of terrible things” and “got rich” during the pandemic.

“You got rich while people were dying, hundreds of thousands of Americans — over a million in the end — and you were getting rich,” Hawley said. “And not only were you doing that, you were using federal employees with taxpayer money to apply for and solicit cash prizes — for you, personally — cash prizes totaling over a million dollars. You did all of that during the pandemic, didn’t you? That’s a question.”

Fauci again declined to answer.
