French police have raided the Paris offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform X on Tuesday morning, escalating a criminal investigation into its Grok AI chatbot and its production of sexually explicit images involving minors.

Prosecutors said the search was carried out by France’s cybercrime unit in coordination with Europol as authorities examine whether Grok was used to generate and distribute illegal content ranging from sexually explicit deepfakes to Holocaust denial.

“At this stage, the conduct of this investigation is part of a constructive approach, with the aim of ultimately ensuring that the X platform complies with French law, insofar as it operates within the national territory,” the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement to Politico.

The probe was opened last month following a surge in sexually explicit deepfakes created using Grok, including images involving children.

The investigation also follows an earlier inquiry into Grok’s antisemitic outputs last summer, with prosecutors now examining allegations that the tool aided the spread of child sexual abuse material and Holocaust-denial content.

Musk and former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino have been summoned for what prosecutors described as “voluntary interviews” set for April 20.

X has not yet issued a statement on the raid.
