MAGA supporters seized on a years-old tweet from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) as he attempted to delay the vote on President Donald Trump’s sprawling “Big Beautiful Bill” with an early-morning floor speech that stretched beyond seven hours.

Jeffries, visibly energized as he invoked his “magic minute” privilege, railed against Trump’s 800-page bill, which packages a broad array of policies into one sweeping legislative push. But as the New York Democrat read letters from constituents he said would be harmed by the bill’s provisions, edging toward breaking the House record, pro-Trump personalities were busy resurfacing some of his own words from the past.

“The filibuster is a Jim Crow era relic that has been used to stop progress for decades. Enough,” Jeffries wrote on X in 2021, a tweet that MAGA allies are now weaponizing against his extended floor protest.

Though Jeffries wasn’t technically filibustering, the comparison was close enough for Trump-world influencers and commentators, who flooded social media with screenshots of the post for an online pile-on and to blast him as a “hypocrite.”

The “magic minute”, which is a House procedural quirk that lets party leaders speak as long as they want once debate has ended, has allowed Jeffries to speak uninterrupted from 5 a.m. into the afternoon.

With Republicans controlling the House by a razor-thin margin, the bill’s fate was technically uncertain in the early hours, but behind-the-scenes negotiations and pressure from Trump himself paid off, and Republican holdouts ultimately fell in line.
