Michael Cohen Predicts Trump Will Cave and Drop His Lawsuit Against the BBC: ‘Too Much at Stake’

President Donald Trump’s former lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen, predicted Wednesday that the president won’t follow through with his defamation suit against the BBC, remarking, “I think that there’s too much at stake for him.”

The lawsuit centers on a 2024 BBC Panorama documentary that combined separate portions of Trump’s January 6 speech into a single clip. Although the BBC later corrected the segment and apologized for the editing, it refused to offer financial compensation, prompting Trump to file a $10 billion defamation suit in December. As the case moves toward a scheduled February 2027 trial, a federal judge recently ordered Trump to produce financial records after finding his sweeping claims of damage to his business empire put those records at issue.

Yet on Wednesday, the president’s attorneys filed an emergency stay motion asking U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett to lift that order.

Appearing as a guest on the Wednesday edition of Mediaite founder Dan Abrams’ SiriusXM radio show, Cohen invoked his own legal history with Trump. In 2023, the president dropped a $500 million lawsuit against his former lawyer for “disparaging” him with “the publication of two books, a podcast series, and innumerable mainstream media appearances.”

Despite making a case for the validity of Trump’s BBC suit, Cohen added, “Do I think that this is a good move for Trump at this point in time? I do not.”

“I don’t think that this is a winnable case,” he continued. “I don’t think that this is a smart move for him. I don’t think that the legal team, probably, gave him the best advice on it. I think that they were probably looking more to the settlements — whether it was CBS or ABC — where they folded and they just rolled over and put money into an account for Trump for the presidential library. Not every case is going to go that way, and certainly not this one with the BBC.”

“I think that there’s too much at stake for him,” concluded Cohen in his prediction that Trump will drop the suit.
