‘Mike Lee Is an Idiot!’ GOP Senator Brutally Roasted After Falling for Phony Powell Resignation Letter

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) is getting lit up on social media after falling for a purported resignation letter from Fed Chair Jerome Powell which seemed to be a very clear fake.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Utah senator posted an image of the letter to X and passed it off as the real thing.

“Powell’s Out!” Lee wrote — captioning the letter and vouching for its authenticity.

But a quick look at the image of the letter reveals some tells that certainly seem to be obvious. For starters, the letter is addressed to “The President, The White House, Washington DC.” There are several oddly placed hyphens — such as when the word grateful is broken up into “gr-ateful” in the closing paragraph.

And then there is the Federal Reserve seal — which, apart from the word “reserve,” doesn’t even come close to the genuine article.

Lee deleted his post on X, telling The Hill’s Al Weaver, “There appeared to be one, and it occurred to me seconds after I posted it that I hadn’t seen it anywhere else, so I deleted it out of an abundance of caution. I don’t know whether it’s legit or not.”

The Utah senator has a history of being duped by internet content. Back in February, Lee spread a Russian propaganda video purporting to show Ukrainian soldiers burning President Donald Trump in effigy. And last July, the senator amplified a phony statement announcing the supposed death of former President Jimmy Carter.

Observers on social media were unsparing in their criticism of Lee. Here’s a small sampling of the reaction:
