A 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked Southeast Asia on Friday, causing widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure. The massive shaker’s epicenter was in Myanmar, but it caused damage throughout the region, including bringing down an under-construction high-rise building in Bangkok. The moment was captured by a dashcam from a nearby highway.
The AP reported on Friday that at least 144 people were confirmed dead so far in Myanmar, according to the military government in the country. AP’s report added:
“The death toll and injuries are expected to rise,” Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing said. He said over 700 people had been injured.
The quake brought down a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok and damaging historic buildings in Myanmar. Damage was also reported in China.
The quake struck in the early afternoon, sending people streaming out of buildings and seeking shelter anywhere they could find it from the blazing sun.
As of Friday midday in the U.S., reports noted that thousands of people are believed to have been killed by the devastating quake in multiple countries.
Videos of the devastation quickly circulated on social media, showing pools in swaying high-rises turning into waterfalls down the side of the buildings. Other clips showed mass panic in the streets as people ran for cover as buildings began to collapse.
