President Donald Trump is floating the idea of having a Republican convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, underscoring his desire for the party to retain both chambers of Congress, on Thursday.

In a post to his Truth Social platform, the president boasted about recent GOP successes, and suggested he’s looking to stage an event to bolster the party ahead of the 2026 vote.

“The Republican Party is doing really well,” Trump wrote. “Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA, GREAT AGAIN. We won every aspect of the Presidential Election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS. We have raised far more money than the Democrats, and are having a great time fixing all of the Country Destroying mistakes made by the Biden Administration, and watching the USA heal and prosper. The results are incredible, a record pace!!! In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!!”

Trump’s suggestion comes on the heels of news that Democrats have been considering the same thing. Axios reported Wednesday that DNC chair Ken Martin has been pushing the idea of a mini-convention to showcase some of the party’s candidates.

The stakes of the 2026 election are enormous for Trump — who would face many roadblocks to his agenda if Democrats were to gain control of either the House or the Senate. The former is seen as far more likely for a flip — as many of the Republican Senate seats up for grabs are considered solidly red.
