Trump Torches ‘Knucklehead’ Fed Chair — But Denies Report He’s Going to Fire Him

President Donald Trump denied a report suggesting he’s planning on firing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, but also refused to rule out the possibility of dropping the “knucklehead.”

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump denied a Fox News report from earlier in the day that he plans on firing Powell “soon” after a meeting with Republican lawmakers. Fox News’ Chad Pergram reported on the meeting and said Trump is “gearing up” to fire Powell after months of criticizing him over interest rates.

Trump denied any immediate plans to fire Powell, but he also blasted him for doing a “terrible job” and later refused to rule out the possibility of canning the Fed chair.

“He’s always been too late. Hence his nickname, too late,” Trump said about Powell. “He should have cut interest rates a long time ago.”

Trump continued trashing Powell as a “terrible Fed chair,” but made clear that “we’re not planning on doing anything.”

“He is doing a lousy job. I’m not talking about that. Fortunately, we get to make a change in the next what, eight months or so. And we’ll pick somebody that’s good and we’ll pick somebody — I want a fair job. We want to see lower interest rates. Our country deserves it. We’re making a lot of money and doing great as a country,” he said.

Trump later called Powell a “knucklehead” who is costing the country money and making it more difficult for people to get mortgages.

“He’s a knucklehead… I’m only interested in low interest [rates] people,” the president said.

Though he denied the report about Powell getting fired, Trump could not “completely rule out” the possibility, suggesting there could be “fraud” behind a $2.5 billion renovation project for the Federal Reserve.

“I don’t rule anything out, but I think it’s highly unlikely,” he said.
