Trump Trashes His Own Speechwriters for WHCD Address: ‘Freaking Stupid Speech They Wrote’

At least one of President Donald Trump’s jokes at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner actually landed: the one where he trashed his own speech.

Trump’s more than hour long speech Friday at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington D.C. was previewed by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt as “unifying, but vicious” — but instead, mostly fell flat.

Even the president realized the night wasn’t going so well when he tried to make a joke about term limits for aging members of Congress and was initially greeted with silence:

All joking aside, I do think we need term limits in Congress. I think term limits are very important because I see what’s happening. I see what’s happening.

The other day, a senator I knew got a text, a great guy, from his wife, and she said, when you get home, I want to have you immediately come up the stairs and make love to me. And he said, I can’t do both.

You know what? You know? In other words, you can’t go up the stairs and make love.

Does anybody get that one? I thought that was actually pretty good. That was actually the only thing I thought was good in this whole freaking stupid speech that they wrote.

That was the only good one. And that went down with not exactly great laughter. I think, you know. In other words, you can’t go up the stairs and make love too old. So we’re looking for term limits. Does anybody understand this stuff?

The annual dinner was originally held in May but was interrupted when a California man, Cole Tomas Allen, allegedly opened fire at the venue. He was later charged with attempting to assassinate the president. The dinner was then rescheduled and the venue changed from the Washington Hilton to the smaller Waldorf Astoria in Washington D.C., with heightened security measures.
