WATCH: Disgraced Politician Drags Out Rolled-Up Rug, Furniture From Office Weeks Before She Agreed to Plead Guilty to Corruption Charges
Newly-released footage showed embattled Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson and several others emptying her office of furniture weeks before it was revealed to the public that she plans to plead guilty to corruption charges.
Boston’s WCVB released the security footage and noted it brings into question how long the city councilor knew about the charges. The Department of Justice announced earlier this month that Anderson agreed to plead guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of theft concerning a program receiving federal funds, both related to a “kickback scheme.”
Footage released by WCVB showed Anderson, who was elected in 2021, dragging a large rolled-up rug out of her office and others helping her remove a sofa, chairs, and more. The footage was taken in early March, weeks before the public knew about the “kickback scheme.”
She is expected to plead guilty on May 5.
According to charging documents, Anderson hired a family member but claimed they were not related. That family member then received large bonuses, a portion of which would be kicked back to the city councilor. In May 2023, Anderson put through a $13,000 payment to the family member/employee and she was then given $7,000 in cash during a secret bathroom meeting.
Anderson also filed false tax returns from 2021 to 2023.
She faces a combined 30 years behind bars on the charges.
The city councilor has not resigned from office, leaving her district in limbo. If she resigns before May 8, a special election will be held. If she resigns after that date — three years after her plea — then an election would be delayed until the fall.
