WATCH: GOP Gov. Chris Sununu Runs Away from His Past Comments That Trump Couldn’t Win Election if Convicted

Governor Chris Sununu (R-NH) is distancing himself from comments he made about the political impact of a felony conviction against former President Donald Trump.

In an interview on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, anchor Kasie Hunt asked Sununu about the prospect of voting for Trump in the fall — following his felony conviction in New York.

“Donald Trump is now a convicted felon,” Hunt said. “Are you comfortable voting for him in November?”

“Oh, sure!” Sununu said. “As apparently, according to the polls, most of America is. … I think there’s a small percentage that say it’ll make them more likely, and a small percentage say it’ll make make them less likely to vote for him. But in the end, it’s kind of a wash.”

In June 2023, Sununu — a prominent supporter of Nikki Haley’s presidential bid — called on Trump to suspend his campaign if he were convicted of a felony. Hunt confronted the governor with similar comments made by Haley during the campaign.

“There is no way that the American people are going to vote for a convicted criminal,” Haley said. “They’re not.”

“Do you think she’s wrong?” Hunt asked.

“Yeah, apparently we were both wrong on that one,” Sununu said — distancing himself from his own remarks as well as Haley’s.

Governor Sununu went on to trash the New York criminal case against Trump as “clearly politically driven.”
