WATCH: Texas Dem Stuck in State Capitol Forced Off DNC Call by Official
MSNBC played video on Thursday of Texas state Rep. Nicole Collier (D) being forced off of a call with the Democratic National Committee that she had joined while under house arrest in the state Capitol.
Host Ali Vitali explained that Collier “was confined to the Austin State House chamber this week, eating and sleeping there rather than leaving with a Republican mandated police escort meant to prevent members from breaking quorum once again. From there, she took part in a DNC call yesterday with top Democrats like Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and California Governor Gavin Newsom. And then this happened.”
Vitali rolled tape of Collier’s FaceTime call that was interrupted when Collier said, “Sorry, I have to leave. They say it’s a felony for me to do this. Apparently, I can’t be on the floor, or in the bathroom.”
Collier then turned to talk to someone off camera saying, “Well, you told me I was only allowed to be here in the bathroom! No, hang on. Bye, everybody. I’ve got to go,” before leaving the call.
Booker exclaimed, “That is outrageous! First of all, let me tell you something. Rep. Collier in the bathroom has more dignity than Donald Trump in the Oval Office.” The video then cut to a downcast Newsom nodding his head.
Collier joined MSNBC from outside the chamber Thursday after being allowed to leave the state house.
“Yesterday, the call on the House ended, and so I was able to leave the House floor and get a shower, since for the last, you know, for over three days,” she said.
Vitali asked who was off camera telling Collier she needed to leave the call.
“I was told that my house arrest was limited to the bathroom — and it had a lounge area — and to the floor and the Members’ Lounge where I can eat. And that was the chair of the House Administration who said that I was not allowed to be in there on a FaceTime call.”
Vitali asked why Collier was accused of committing a felony or any kind of crime by taking a call from the bathroom.
“Well, they didn’t know,” Collier answered. “They just said that somebody complained, which was another Republican woman who said…complained to law enforcement, the DPS that was on the floor, that I was on a FaceTime call.”
Collier accused the Texas Republicans of employing “more intimidation tactics, ways that they try to silence people that disagree with them. I’m not surprised, but I am disappointed.”
Texas Democrats returned to Austin this week after having fled the state to prevent a quorum from voting on a “gerrymandered” redistricting map that favored Republicans. On Wednesday, the map was approved.
