CBS Graphic Makes the Case That Travis Kelce Needs Taylor Swift in Attendance to Have a Big Game
In the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 7 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, tight end Travis Kelce had the biggest first half of his career with 143 receiving yards and a touchdown.
While many viewers attributed Kelce’s big day on Sunday to the fact that it was National Tight Ends Day, the CBS production crew had another theory in mind involving his biggest new fan.
Since Kelce and Taylor Swift confirmed they were seeing one another after weeks of speculation, the pop star has become a regular sight at Chiefs games. On Sunday, Swift was once again there to witness Kelce’s monster game.
As the game was approaching halftime, CBS aired a graphic jokingly arguing that her presence has become essential to his on-field performance. With Swift in attendance, the graphic said, Kelce averaged 99.3 yards per game this season. When he’s “left to his own devices” and Swift isn’t there, that number comes all the way down to 46.5.
Play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz didn’t seem very amused by the stat. Tony Romo — who was in a high-profile relationship with Jessica Simpson during his playing days — praised Kelce for not letting the outside noise affect his play.
“The way it’s presented, it makes people think, ‘Does he care about football?'” Romo said. “Yes, this guy loves football more than anybody and this will not affect anything… If anything, he’s probably gonna be more methodical with his time and he’ll do more football things because you can’t go anywhere or do anything with all the people chasing you around.”
