ESPN Analyst Jokes that Celtics Should Draft LeBron James’ Son as ‘Ransom’ — Send Note to Lakers Saying ‘We Have Your Son’
ESPN analyst Tim Legler jokingly suggested Thursday that the Celtics should draft Bronny James — the son of LeBron James — as leverage for a potential with the Lakers.
Bronny, who played for one season at the University of Southern California, was not selected in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft on Wednesday night. He’s projected to be drafted late in the second round, where both the Lakers and Celtics have picks. In fact, the teams draft back-to-back with the 54th and 55th picks.
Because LeBron has previously expressed his desire to one day play with his son in the NBA, Legler quipped that it would be the perfect opportunity for the Celtics — who have the 54th pick — to take Bronny and hold him for “ransom.”
“You all know that [the Lakers] picked 55th,” Legler said on First Take on Thursday. “You know who picks 54th? Boston. So, I like movies. I like true crime, stuff like that. I’m just saying: 54th pick we renew the ‘Cold War’ between the Celtics and the Lakers. The Boston Celtics take Bronny James and they send a ransom note to the Lakers [saying], ‘We have your son. We have your son. If you want him back, it’s gonna take Austin Reaves.”
Legler isn’t the first media member to make the unorthodox suggestion. Bill Simmons floated the same idea last week.
Bill Simmons wants the Boston Celtics to draft Bronny James and hold him hostage
“Here’s my case: everybody says this draft sucks. The Celtics are so deep… anyone in this draft isn’t going to play for them. Why not take Bronny and you basically hold him hostage? Because all… pic.twitter.com/H0pR0SlBu8
