Mariners Outfielder Takes Worst Route Imaginable To Fly Ball, Pays the Price By Faceplanting Into Warning Track
Mariners left fielder Jake Fraley had himself a little adventure on Wednesday afternoon as he tried to chase down a long fly ball from the Bobby Dalbec of the Red Sox.
With a runner on first in the top of the second, Dalbec smacked a deep fly ball to left center field. Fraley started to chase the ball down, albeit taking a circuitous route to do so. Eventually, he let up as if he thought center fielder Jarred Kelenic would be in a position to make the grab. Realizing this wasn’t the case, Fraley made a last ditch effort to catch the ball, and stumbled to the ground face down.
The ball bounced on the warning track and into the stands for a ground-rule double.
“Fraley just butchered that,” said Red Sox play-by-play man Dave O’Brien. “He and Kelenic were just staring at each other like, ‘Are you gonna take it?’ Who’s gonna take it?”
The Red Sox would go on to score two runs in the inning.
Fraley’s miscue comes a day after Jake Brentz of the Kansas City Royals threw the “worst pitch in MLB history.” Brentz nearly hit himself in the foot with a pitch that was most likely supposed to be a changeup that he gripped way too tight and/or held onto for too long.
