NY Liberty Star Throws Up in the Middle of the WNBA Finals and Gets Back on the Court Like Nothing Happened
New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu was momentarily overwhelmed by the intensity of Wednesday’s WNBA Finals game when she actually threw up during a timeout.
Late in the game — with the Liberty on the brink of elimination — Ionescu made a clutch 3-pointer to prevent the Las Vegas Aces from pulling away. After hitting the big shot, the 25-year-old walked to the Liberty’s bench and threw up in a trash can. One of the coaches held up a towel to somewhat conceal Ionescu during the act.
Once she was finished, she simply returned to the court as if it was normal.
According to sideline reporter Holly Rowe, that’s because it actually is.
“You talk about nerves in a finals moment,” Rowe said as the broadcast returned from a commercial break. “Sabrina Ionescu — who just hit a big 3 — came over to the sidelines and then lost the contents of her stomach. She told me that she gets nervous before games; but she went right back out, wiped off her chin, and kept on playing. Everybody in the building feels a little bit like this. It is so tense out here, guys.”
To Ionescu’s credit, she did seem fine after temporarily feeling ill. In fact, despite eventually losing to the Las Vegas Aces, Ionescu did hit another big shot to give the Liberty a chance with under a minute left in the fourth quarter.
