UConn Men’s Basketball Coach Rips National Media for Not Covering His Team: ‘If We Were at Duke or Kentucky or Kansas… It Would Be the Biggest Story’

University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley called out the media for the lack of coverage his team has received despite its dominance.

Last season, the Huskies finished 31-8 with an average margin of victory of 14.4 en route to a national championship. This season, the team has become even more dominant with a remarkable 35-3 record. The Huskies have also beaten opponents by an average of 18.2.

That success hasn’t slowed down in the slightest since the beginning of the NCAA Tournament, with UConn beating teams by 39, 27, 30, and 25 before its Final Four game against Alabama on Saturday.

Though the team is in the middle of a historic run, Hurley believe it’s not talked about enough; and he believes it’s because they’re not one of the more popular programs in the country.

“We’ve won a lot,” Hurley said on a recent episode of the Pardon My Take podcast. “Look at what we’ve done since [former New Mexico State guard] Teddy Allen knocked us out of the tournament there in that brutal rock fight in Buffalo. We’ve dominated and we’ve put guys in the NBA. We’ve won all the championships. Now, we’re in the Final Four. We’re gonna have more guys in the [draft] lottery this year.

“We don’t get talked about enough. Our season hasn’t been covered — in my mind — in the national media enough. This is a team that’s done historic stuff. If we were at Duke or Kentucky or Kansas, they would lead SportsCenter with it and it would be the biggest story in sports; but because we’re in Storrs, Connecticut, we’re just a little grimier there.”
