WATCH: Golf Channel Mistakenly Interviews Man at Pro-Am Thinking He’s Former NFL Pro Vince Young
A reporter for The Golf Channel made a painfully awkward blunder when she began interviewing a man at a pro-am event that she thought was former NFL quarterback Vince Young.
During the broadcast of Thursday’s BMW Charity Pro-Am in South Carolina, it was revealed that Young was participating. They then threw it over to Lauren Withrow, who was shown walking alongside a man who clearly wasn’t the Texas Longhorns legend.
“Played six seasons in the NFL, arguably one of the best NCAA quarterbacks at Texas, [and] picked up golf about four years ago,” Withrow said as the man grinned. “What’s the biggest shift you made going from the ultimate team sport to now the ultimate individual sport?”
That’s when he had to deliver the bad news on live TV.
“I apologize,” he said. “You have the wrong person. I’m Everette Sands over at Citadel — which I’m a football coach.”
Luckily for Withrow, Sands was also an all-time great college athlete. During his time at the South Carolina military college The Citadel, he rushed for the second-most career rushing yards in school history with 16 career games of at least 100 yards. As noted in his bio on the school’s website, he was never once tackled behind the line of scrimmage on a rushing attempt.
Because he also played football, he was able to answer the question and Withrow pivoted well to finish the interview.
After the bizarre interaction, Sands got on a video call with WCIV sports director Scott Eisberg to explain how he found himself in that unfortunate position.
“A young lady came up and she said, ‘Vince?'” he said, “which I thought she was introducing herself to me. [She] said, ‘Can I get an interview after you tee off?’ I was like, ‘Sure.’ And I teed off and then she came up and she started talking about being one of the best quarterbacks in the NCAA, and playing for Texas, a six-year NFL career.
“And I was like, ‘She thinks I’m Vince Young.'”
I haven’t laughed this hard in a while. On live national TV, a Golf Channel reporter thinks she’s interviewing Vince Young.
She’s in fact interviewing Citadel football great and assistant coach Everette Sands.

Sands added he later saw Young and jokingly introduced himself as “Vince Young” before explaining what happened earlier in the day.
