WATCH: Nationals Pitcher Max Scherzer Repeatedly Shakes Off His Catcher in Hilarious Miscommunication
Disagreements between the pitcher and catcher are not uncommon in Major League Baseball. It’s part of the reason why a few star pitchers require “personal” catchers, to assure they are comfortable with their battery-mate.
But usually after one, or at most two shakes from the pitcher, both players get on the same page rather quickly. Wednesday night in Chicago, Washington Nationals three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer struggled to connect with his catcher Yan Gomes.
Gomes called for one pitch and Scherzer said no. Then Gomes called for a second, third, fourth and fifth, but Scherzer kept saying nope — eventually summoning his catcher to the mound for a meeting. Five shakes from the 36-year-old Scherzer! A pitcher that throws his four-seamer half the time, mixing in three other pitches to fill out the remaining 50%.
Gomes was likely going off the scouting report, but Scherzer knew he didn’t have much left in the tank. He wanted to empty it on that pitch, his final of the night. And it worked, getting Chicago Cubs infielder David Bote to pop up. Scherzer ended up with the win as Washington topped the Cubs 4-3.
