White House Spox Praises Trump For Saving Golf Match By Ending Railroad Strike

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed Monday that President Donald Trump’s intervention in a labor dispute saved the historic Ryder Cup from being disrupted.

During her opening remarks at Monday’s briefing, Leavitt went over Trump’s schedule for the week. Included in the schedule was a trip to New York on Friday to watch the Ryder Cup — the 98-year-old golf competition that pits an American team against a European one.

In the weeks leading up to the Ryder Cup, there was a great deal of concern when it came to transportation to the event. Earlier in the month, several Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) unions voted to authorize a strike in the event of contract negotiations falling through. As noted in a report from CBS News, at least half of the estimated 250,000 competition attendees were expected to use LIRR services to get to and from the golf course.

Leavitt praised Trump for signing an Executive Order to avoid that strike:

This event is one of the greatest sporting events in the world, and it would not be taking place this year without President Trump’s help. President Trump signed an Executive Order last week preventing a strike that would have crippled the New York City area ahead of the tournament, and at the request of the five labor unions who all represent workers on the Long Island Rail Road.

Leavitt also read out a statement from professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau, who commended Trump for his “decisive leadership” in stepping in to prevent the strike.
