‘Wide Right! Wide Right!’ Kevin Harlan Gives Instant Classic Call of Buffalo Bills’ Stunning Missed Field Goal Against the Chiefs

Play-by-play announcer Kevin Harlan added to his legend on Sunday night with an incredible call as the Buffalo Bills lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Bills’ season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion. Trailing 27-24 with a little less than two minutes left in the game, the Bills set up for a 44-yard field goal to tie the game. Kicker Tyler Bass seemingly lined the kick up perfectly, but the ball suddenly veered off to the right and flew past the upright.

The stunning miss quieted the fans at Highmark Stadium who realized their season was about to come to an end right before their eyes. Some even burst into tears.

While CBS’s TV broadcast was handled by Jim Nantz and Tony Romo, Harlan was in charge of the radio call. For those listening at the time, he knocked it out of the park.

“The snap is good; the ball put down; the kick is up; and no good!” Harlan said. “Wide right! Wide right! The Bills kicker missed a field goal wide right! Jubilation for the Chiefs sideline! 1:43 to go! Bass missing wide right from 44!”

Harlan later said the missed field goal reminded him of a similar miss by former Bills kicker Scott Norwood. With the Bills trailing the New York Giants 20-19 in Super Bowl XXV, Norwood missed a go-ahead 47-yarder with just a few seconds remaining. The phrase “wide right” remains a haunting memory for Bills fans as the team is still looking for its first Super Bowl win.
