AARP Asks to Not Be Cited in DCCC Ad Targeting the Elderly

The AARP is distancing themselves from a Democrat-made ad blasting a GOP Senate candidate in Michigan, citing their longstanding history of nonpartisanship.

The DCCC-sponsored ad, which targets Republican candidate Terri Lynd Land, artfully uses photos of old people alongside statistics from an AARP Voter’s Guide, to paint Lynd as an enemy of the elderly. ““Michiganders deserve a Senator that will fight to preserve the Medicare guarantee,” a voiceover states, and not someone “who would slash benefits, raise prescription drug prices, and force seniors to pay thousands more each year.”

“AARP did not authorize the use of its name currently running in the campaign ads,” a press release states, adding that they also do not endorse or donate to candidates, and have not done so in 28 years. In addition, the data cited in the ad comes from their Voter Guides, which “enable voters to find where the voters stand, in their own words, on the future of Social Security, Medicare, Financial Security, and other critical issues.”

And as a spokesman told BuzzFeed: “We’d appreciate if they removed AARP from the ad.”

Watch the ad below, and take a shot every time you see AARP information quoted:
