‘Absolute Insanity!’ CNN Data Guru Says Americans ‘Hate, Hate, Hate’ Trump’s New Tariffs

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten declared President Donald Trump is so underwater when it comes to public approval of his tariffs that he might as well be the “Little Mermaid.”

Enten joined John Berman Thursday and showed the widespread opposition to new tariffs on imported goods.

According to polling from CBS News/YouGov, 63% of Americans oppose the new tariffs while 48% are in favor.

That’s a significant change from November 2024, when 52% said they approved of Trump’s tariff strategy and 37% said they opposed it.

“I feel like I’m in bizarro world, okay?” Enten said. “Because the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over again and hope for a different result. And that is just, simply put, not been the case with President Trump, in terms of, the train has left the station and the American people have spoken. They hate, hate, hate these new tariffs.”

Enten chalked up the change to Americans seeing the actual cost of tariffs as they enter the “real world.”

He said:

What happened to the opposition to new tariffs up like a rocket? We’re talking 63% of Americans now oppose the idea of new tariffs, compared to just 37% who favor it.

So the bottom line is this: the American people have seen what tariffs have done to the economy, and they, simply put, do not like it and have turned against the president of United States who, like I said, it feels like bizarro world because from a political standpoint, it is absolute insanity.

They keep trying to do something that the American people clearly, very much do not like.

Tariffs have also done no favors for Trump in terms of his overall approval rating.

Since Trump imposed tariffs in 2025 on what the administration called “Liberation Day,” Enten noted his net approval rating has been negative. That counts for more than 480 days.

“It’s almost like he’s the Little Mermaid. He just doesn’t come up for air anymore,” Enten said.
