Blue Whale Sighting Causes BBC Presenter to Cut Interview, Go Nuts
A BBC One presenter went nuts during an interview when a massive blue whale was caught on camera by a nearby helicopter.
Steve Backshall was interviewing Doris Welch, a whale expert no less, off the coast of Monterey, California during Big Blue Live. The discussion was all about blue whales, but when one surfaced near their boat, Backshall immediately cut the interview short while the helicopter’s live feed of the whale took over.
“This is one of the most extraordinary things I’ve ever seen,” exclaimes Backshall. “When I started off filming wildlife just 16 years ago, if someone had said, ‘Go and film a blue whale,’ I would have said they were crazy.”
Poor Welch never really pops back into the frame during the ensuing rush to film the creature, though her frightened look of surprise at Backshall’s sudden exclamation will live on in Internet infamy forever.
