Charlie Sheen on Today: ‘I Am in Fact HIV-Positive’
Actor Charlie Sheen admitted in an interview with NBC’s Today that he is in fact HIV-positive, and has hidden his condition from the public for years.
“I’m here to admit that I am in fact HIV-positive,” Sheen told host Matt Lauer.
“I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of subtruths and very harmful and [immaterial] stories that are about threatening the health of so many others, which couldn’t be farther from the truth,” he continued.
Sheen, who does not have AIDS, said that he learned about his condition four years ago after being hospitalized for suffering chronic headaches. “They walked in the room and said, boom, here’s what’s going on. It’s a hard three letters to absorb, you know. It’s — it’s a turning point in one’s life.”
The award-winning television and film actor said he confided in people he thought he could trust, but those people were now acting in “treason” against him. Sheen said that one of the prostitutes that he brought into his house went to his medicine cabinet and took a picture of his antiviral drugs and threatened to sell them to a tabloid.
