CNN Torments Reporter by Airing Footage of Him ‘Puking’ During Hurricane Melissa Fly-By

CNN gave viewers a queasy moment Monday night when OutFront aired footage of meteorologist Matthew Cappucci puking during a flight through Hurricane Melissa, before he delivered a sobering warning about the catastrophic storm barreling toward Jamaica.

Cappucci, a senior meteorologist with MyRadar, joined a NOAA Hurricane Hunters mission to collect data inside the Category 5 storm, the most powerful ever recorded near the island.

During the interview, host Erin Burnett described the flight as “horrifically turbulent,” and noted, “I know that you got sick on the flight,” as producers rolled the tape of his moment of illness on-screen.

“You have to remember, the Hurricane Hunters are flying through the storm at about 280mph,” Cappucci said. “And so you have ten crazy minutes with the turbulence, and then suddenly it’s calm and you’re in the eye.”

He went on to describe the eerie beauty inside the hurricane.

“I have to say, that was one of the most breathtaking. And simultaneously horrifying experiences I’ve ever had,” he said. “Even though it was night, the moon was illuminating what we call the stadium effect. Basically, you’re right in the middle of this atmospheric sink drain, and yet you look up all around you 360 degrees, towering, hulking thunderstorms overhead, spiraling around, marking that eyewall. The buzz-saw of 150 to 170 mile per hour winds.”

“And that’s what’s heading for Jamaica,” he warned.

After the broadcast, Cappucci downplayed the moment on X with humor, joking that his “television career has peaked.”

He added: “Also rest assured I was fine 5 minutes later. I knew what I was into and it was worth it 10 fold.”

The National Hurricane Center has warned that Hurricane Melissa could bring “catastrophic” damage, tornado-like winds, and weeks-long power outages as it makes landfall, the strongest storm to strike Jamaica in more than 170 years.
