De Blasio Claims New Yorkers Will Not ‘Accept Mass Deportations,’ Eric Adams Trying To ‘Get on the Good Side’ of Trump Due to Charges

Bill De Blasio claimed New Yorkers will not “accept mass deportations” by President Donald Trump despite polling showing broad general support for the policy.

During a Thursday appearance on MSNBC with anchor Ana Cabrera, De Blasio also took a swipe at the man currently in his former role: New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D). Adams has had a very different approach to illegal migrants than De Blasio, often citing it as one of the biggest problems in New York City and calling for more federal action and resources.

Cabrera noted on Thursday that on top of Adams appearing more ready to work with the Trump administration on immigration, polling has shown a general support for deporting anyone in the country illegally. A recent New York Times poll found 55% support that broad policy.

The reporter argued there appears to be a “rift in the Democratic Party” over immigration, something De Blasio and Adams’s opposite views on immigration shows.

“It seems there is somewhat a rift within the Democratic Party that is starting to materialize. On the issue of immigration, just for example, what we’re seeing here in New York City with the current mayor, Mayor Adams, who is saying he’s ready to work with Trump on enforcing these immigration policies. He’s now opposing New York’s sanctuary city laws. This is a 180 from when you were in office. What do you make of it?” Cabrera asked.

De Blasio argued New Yorkers will “not accept mass deportations” and that asking residents for documentation will only lead to a less cooperative public.

“Look, I don’t happen to agree with what he’s saying, but I also think people in this city are not going to accept mass deportation. So it’s one thing to say, oh, we’ll work with the new president because he was elected duly,” De Blasio said.

Cabrera then asked whether Adams’s willingness to work with Trump is tied at all to his criminal charges, and De Blasio surprised her by giving a straight and simple answer.

Adams has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, federal program bribery, and to receive campaign contributions by foreign nationals, wire fraud, bribery, and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national.

“Do you think it’s personal though for Mayor Adams because of his situation facing criminal prosecution? He’s trying to get on the good side of the president?” Cabrera asked.

“I think the simplest answer I can offer you is yes,” De Blasio said.

“Okay, thank you,” Cabrera said with a laugh as De Blasio did not elaborate on his answer.

“The truth can be simple sometimes,” he said.

“It’s so rare we get a yes/no answer to a yes/no question,” Cabrera said.
