Fetterman Warns Dems Senate Seat Now ‘In Play’ After Far-Left Candidate’s Win and ‘Arrogant Campaign’: ‘Real Situation’

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) warned Democrats they’re facing a “real situation” in Michigan following progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s Senate primary win against centrist Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI).

Fetterman joined Wolf Blitzer on CNN’s The Situation Room on Wednesday, following a number of primary elections on Tuesday. Fetterman joined Blitzer just as El-Sayed’s race was called, making him the latest progressive liberal to enjoy a primary victory.

Fetterman, who has publicly feuded with El-Sayed, said that Senate seat is now “in play” for Republicans, arguing El-Sayed’s victory only shows a divided base that Republicans can take advantage of.

El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers, whom Fetterman warned is a “strong candidate.”

The Pennsylvania congressman noted that Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) previously only beat Rogers by a thin margin.

The senator also called out El-Sayed for associating and campaigning with far-left streamer Hasan Piker, who has a history of controversial statements about the United States, communism, the terror group Hamas, and more.

Fetterman said:

Well, I think it definitely puts the seat in play. Michigan typically doesn’t really elect a Republican in the Senate for a while. And now Rogers was a very strong candidate, objectively.

He barely lost to Slotkin and she is a very strong candidate, and she just barely won back then. And now if you see some of the polling, El-Sayed is under five or maybe more points against him.

And now some real money is going to flood into that state. And a lot of the things that he has done and said during the primary are going to come back to haunt [him], like campaigning with a guy that loves Hamas and is very proud to stand with communist regimes.

Fetterman, who has been threatening to leave the Democratic Party if they go too far on Israel, called out El-Sayed’s campaign as “very arrogant” and warned he presents a “real situation” for the party.

“He had a very arrogant campaign and now today he just discovered that less than a majority of your state’s only Democrats didn’t even want you and vote for you. You came in around 48%, so you have a real situation as Democrats. Now that puts that seat in play,” he said.

El-Sayed’s race was called after he received roughly 48% of the vote, or 740,950. Stevens meanwhile brought in about 47% of the vote, or 726,057 votes.
