Fox News Host Kayleigh McEnany Points to Urban Dictionary Definition of ’86’d’ to Excoriate Comey

Outnumbered co-host Kayleigh McEnany invoked the Urban Dictionary definition of “86’d” to drive home the violent intent behind the number after former FBI boss James Comey posted an arrangement of seashells reading “86 47” on social media.

McEnany opened Friday’s show with the Comey social media post, which has been slammed by conservatives as a violent threat against President Donald Trump. The photo was captioned, “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.”

“No, not so cool,” McEnany scolded. “In fact, 86 is frequently used as a call sign for murdering or getting rid of someone.”

To make her point further, McEnany relayed the definition for “86’d” from the Urban Dictionary:

To get rid of, originally for killing someone. The phrase “80 miles out and 6 feet under” was reserved for someone who had to dig their own grave 80 miles from civilization and then get shot execution-style. All terms for 86’d originated from this, be it alcohol or eliminating.

Merriam Webster, however, defines “86” as slang “meaning ‘to throw out,’ ‘to get rid of,’ or ‘to refuse service to.’ It comes from 1930s soda-counter slang meaning that an item was sold out. There is varying anecdotal evidence about why the term eighty-six was used, but the most common theory is that it is rhyming slang for nix.”

Comey deleted the photo not long after posting it, saying, “I posted earlier a picture of some shells I saw today on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message. I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”

But McEnany didn’t buy it, saying, “Notice there is not an apology there and it’s hard to believe a former FBI director with a storied career in law enforcement had no idea about the meaning behind 86.”

A number of right-leaning figures, including Trump himself, have blasted the Comey post, with many branding it an assassination threat against a president who’s already been the target of two such attempts. DHS has said it’s investigating Comey’s post.
