GOP Sen. Rob Portman: ‘I Don’t Agree With Every Tweet’ By President Trump

Last week, one of the major political stories revolved around Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) announcing he would not run for reelection. After making the announcement, Flake gave a barnburning speech in which he tore into President Donald Trump for his “reckless, outrageous, and undignified behavior.” Flake’s speech came on the heels of Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) — another Republican lawmaker not seeking reelection — unleashing on Trump, saying he’ll be remembered for debasing the nation.

During an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press this morning, Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) was pressed on whether he overlooks things that concern him about the president because Trump won his state in the election.

“He’s our president,” Portman told host Chuck Todd. “Just as I worked with President Obama and President Clinton before him, and I didn’t agree with them on a lot of stuff, I think that’s my job.”

Todd then asked the Republican lawmaker if he believed “character still counts in American politics.”

“Of course — yeah, of course character counts,” Portman responded. “I don’t agree with every tweet., as you know I’ve spoken up on occasion.”

He continued, “Yet, if you’re focused on the tweets and not focused on actually accomplishing what people are looking to happen for them and their families, then you are getting out of touch with the American people.”
