GOP Senator Gushes Over Trump for Having ‘Subjected Himself’ to ‘Most Restrictive’ Crypto Ethics Rules ‘Ever’
Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) praised President Donald Trump on Tuesday as having accepted unprecedented restrictions on his own financial interests in the form of a revised cryptocurrency market structure bill while rejecting Democrats critical of new ethics provisions as impossible to please.
Speaking to Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo on Thursday’s Mornings with Maria, Lummis, who helped negotiate the updated ethics language, praised the president’s “willingness” to accept tougher ethics standards than any previous president.
“We are dealing with, of course, the president’s willingness to subject himself and Melania Trump to the most restrictive ethics language that a president has ever subjected himself to,” Lummis said.
“But, of course, there is no pleasing Democrats at this point, so we are facing some headwinds,” she added.
Her comments came a day after Senate Republicans unveiled a revised, 616-page version of the CLARITY Act, an overhaul of federal cryptocurrency regulation that includes a new ethics section crafted after negotiations with the White House.
The revised proposal would bar public officials and their spouses from issuing or sponsoring digital assets while in office, with violations carrying potential fines and the forfeiture of crypto-related profits. Officials could avoid penalties by divesting their holdings or placing them in qualified blind trusts before taking office.
The Democratic opposition, however, argues that the bill’s language leaves loopholes and does little to address concerns over Trump’s family’s cryptocurrency ventures, which earned the president $1.4 billion in 2025, the first year of his second term.
Lawmakers have also objected to provisions giving the Justice Department exclusive authority to enforce the ethics rules, rather than allowing state attorneys general to pursue cases.
