‘How Dare You Use the Bible’: Kinzinger Lays Into Speaker Johnson for Defending Trump’s Pardons

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) blasted Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for defending President Donald Trump’s pardons of 1,500 people connected to the Capitol riot.

Kinzinger served on the House January 6 select committee that investigated Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, which culminated in a pro-Trump mob storming the Capitol.

“We believe in redemption,” Johnson said at a press conference on Wednesday. “We believe in second chances.” He added that the Republican-controlled House will not “look backwards” at Trump’s pardons.

Yet at the same presser, the speaker vowed to investigate pardons that former President Joe Biden gave to members of his family.

“It was shocking,” he stated. “What President Biden did on his way out, pardoning his family for a decade of any activity, any non-violent [activity]. It was breathtaking to us. I don’t think anything like that’s been anticipated.”

Johnson said that the House “will be looking at it.”

Hours later, Kinzinger appeared on AC360 on CNN to voice his outrage at Johnson:

So, I’m speaking as a Christian here. I saw Speaker Johnson say, “We believe in redemption.”

How dare you use the Bible in this? First off, the big key on redemption is repentance. All these people you saw… have no repentance. In fact, they think what they did is right. And look, Pam Hemphill, who actually is rejecting the pardon, she has real repentance for this.

And then, by the way, Hunter Biden, who was actually repentant of the things he did, spent two years being attacked for political purposes. I mean, don’t talk about repentance, Speaker Johnson. Defend this.
Go out and defend that there’s these criminals out on the street now. Do that. I’ll respect [you] if you do it. All these Republicans, go on the record and say you agree with this, but don’t come here with repentance to me.
