‘I’m Worried!’ Kevin McCarthy Says It’s Shaping Up to Be Rough Midterms for GOP

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy sounded the alarm over Republicans’ midterm prospects Wednesday, warning that the party lacks a clear message and could be heading into a difficult election with its congressional majority at risk.

The former GOP congressman delivered the blunt assessment during an appearance on Fox News after host Dana Perino asked him how he would “size up” the party’s chances in the mid-terms.

“The midterms right now, I’m worried because the generic ballot’s over six, so that’s advantage to the Democrats,” McCarthy said.

“I’m worried that I’m not seeing the clear message from Republicans, what is the plan of why you should stay in the majority? What is your economic plan going forward? What are you touting as the successes you have had already?” he continued.

“I’m worried about certain states,” he said before breaking down the locations he believes could spell trouble for the GOP.

“I’m going to watch Iowa, I think, that governor’s race there. Ashley Hinson is the best Senate candidate in the country. I think she ends up winning but we have four congressional seats, when i first came in we only had one Republican one. They’re going to be some tough ones,” he said.

He also identified Pennsylvania as a potential battleground, arguing Governor Josh Shapiro (D) could have an impact further down the ballot: “Pennsylvania is going to be a swing state, Democrats have a good governor who’ll probably try to run the tickets up because he wants to run for president.”

McCarthy reserved perhaps his starkest warning for Arizona, where he questioned whether Trump-backed Republican nominee Andy Biggs could appeal beyond the GOP base.

“I’m worried about Arizona because I don’t think the Republican nominee we have, Biggs, could cut across and get moderates and others and we picked up seats from Democrats to win the majority,” he said.

“If he underperforms he could cost us Congress’s majority,” the former congressman concluded.
