‘It’s Not In My District’: AOC Shrugs Off Question About NYC School Being Shut Down To House Migrants
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) essentially shrugged off a question from Fox Business correspondent Hillary Vaughn how the congresswoman feels about schools in New York City being closed down in order to house migrants.
The congresswoman first said it’s not her district, and then said using the school to house migrants probably won’t be a long-term situation.
Students at James Madison High School had to relocate to online learning earlier this week after city officials in New York relocated hundreds of migrants to the school due during a winter storm. The migrants were eventually moved back to their shelter in Brooklyn.
Vaughn caught up with the progressive lawmaker on Capitol Hill on Thursday to ask for her response to the emerging migrant crisis in large metropolitan cities like New York. Regarding the school issue, AOC appeared to ignore the question at first before giving a more in-depth response.
The Fox Business reporter asked Ocasio-Cortez if she’s Okay with a school being used as a shelter” in which the lawmaker noted that the issue at James Madison was not in her district.
VAUGH: Are you okay with a school being used as a shelter?
OCASIO-CORTEZ: You know, I think it’s — Again, this is not, it’s not in my district. I think it’s very clear here that what’s most important is that we identify a facility that’s appropriate for these folks. I don’t anticipate this being a long-term solution. It shouldn’t be a long term solution.
Both the mayors of Chicago and New York City have bashed the federal government in recent weeks over the lack of resources in large cities to house and deal with migrants coming from across the southern border.
