Jim Jordan Backs Florida Resident Lara Trump in Race for Thom Tillis’ North Carolina Senate Seat
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) backed President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump in the race for Sen. Thom Tillis’ (R-NC) seat on Wednesday, predicting she would win both the Republican primary and the election if she decided to run.
“She’d be great,” said Jordan during an appearance on Newsmax. “I think she’d be great. If she wants to do it, I think she’ll be the nominee and I think she’ll win.”
He continued, “If she doesn’t, there’s all kinds of other great people as well. There’s Mike Whatley, the chairman of the RNC. There’s a number of colleagues, whether it’s Dr. Murphy, whether it’s Richard Hudson. A number of new members from North Carolina, a lot of good colleagues there. Any of them would be great, I think, in the United States Senate as well, but I think Lara Trump is probably the favorite and we’ll see if she wants to do it, but she’d be great.”
President Trump named his daughter-in-law as his “first choice” in the race for Tillis’ seat on Tuesday, despite acknowledging that she doesn’t actually live in North Carolina.
“She’s a great person. Lara Trump. I mean that would always be my first choice, but she doesn’t live there now,” said Trump. “But, she’s there all the time, parents, and she really knows North Carolina well.”
While Lara Trump was born and raised in North Carolina, she currently resides in Florida.
Tillis announced on Sunday that he would not seek re-election in the Senate after Trump threatened to back a primary challenge against him for refusing to support the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
“Numerous people have come forward wanting to run in the Primary against ‘Senator Thom’ Tillis,” wrote Trump in a Truth Social post. “I will be meeting with them over the coming weeks, looking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina and, so importantly, the United States of America.”
Tillis was one of three Republican senators who voted with Democrats against the Trump-backed bill on Monday. Despite their opposition, the bill narrowly passed the Senate by just one vote.
