John Bolton Debates CNN’s Berman on the Magnitude of Jan. 6: Anyone Saying We Were Close to a Coup ‘Vastly Overstates the Danger’
Former national security adviser to President Trump, John Bolton faced off against CNN’s John Berman regarding the level of danger that January 6th truly presented, during his appearance on New Day Friday Morning.
Bolton started his interview on CNN by agreeing with Berman that, “Joe Biden is the fairly elected president,” of the United States.
The conversation took a turn, however, when Berman directed the conversation towards the outcome of January 6th and the dangers it poses to American society and political action.
When asked to discuss the outcome of January 6th, Bolton said, “There’s a level of hysteria from your prior guests in this discussion that I think is very unhelpful in understanding what the nature of the problem we face is.”
Bolton did not undermine that there is a legitimate problem displayed by the events of January 6th, “it’s Donald Trump who is a real aberration in American politics,” chimed Bolton. He continued, “So, before we draw sweeping conclusions from insufficient information, let’s all take a deep breath.”
“I could no more have helped conduct a coup against the president of the United States than the chair you’re sitting in,” quipped Bolton.
Bolton acknowledged that Donald Trump’s actions to undermine the Justice Department in order to benefit his election fraud theories were, “reprehensible from top to bottom.” The former national security advisor continued to assert that, “It shows the level of incomprehensible behavior trump was engaged in. He didn’t have a coup plot. He couldn’t think that comprehensively to come up with a coup plot.”
“When people talk about how close we were to a coup, it vastly overstates the danger,” Bolton concluded. “And if you do that you’re going to prepare for the wrong threat the next time. I don’t in any way defend Donald Trump, but lets understand clearly what exactly the threat was.”
