Keith Ellison Can’t Say No Future Accusers Will Come Forward: ‘I Don’t Know What Somebody Might Cook Up’
More than a month after a former girlfriend of Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) accused him of domestic abuse, the attorney general hopeful can’t seem to shake the story he’s vehemently denied.
Ellison faced a tough line of questioning during a Friday debate against Republican challenger Doug Wardlow, who amplified the accusations from Karen Monahan along with another woman, Amy Alexander, the latter who in 2006 claimed she was also abused during an argument.
“Two days before the primary, she made these allegations,” Ellison said of Monahan’s account of physical and emotional abuse, just after claiming Alexander was spreading “falsehoods.”
“They’re not true. I’ve said that they’re not true,” he added.
The congressman explained there’s “an independent investigation” to look into the matter, but Wardlow immediately dismissed any notion of impartiality.
“It’s not an independent investigation,” he responded. “It’s independent by your friends and fellow party members. That’s not an independent investigation.”
Asked whether he declined to meet with Monahan and an investigator on the case, Ellison explained he had no desire to see his ex again.
“We broke up two years ago for a reason,” he said. “I don’t want to be in a relationship and therefore I left the relationship, and so to get back in touch with her again is not something I’m interested in doing. I’ve met somebody new and I’m trying to pursue my life and move on.”
However, Ellison didn’t give the clearest of answers when prompted to confirm that there would be no additional accusers coming forward.
“In this political environment I don’t know what somebody might cook up,” he said. “But I can tell you that there is absolutely nobody that I’m aware of who has any sort of — who’s threatening or suggesting or who’s ever made a prior accusation.”
To that, Ward contended that “two credible, strong allegations of domestic abuse allegations is enough,” stating “there’s documentary evidence” including “a medical record where Ms. Monahan reported to her doctor the abuse that was going on.”
That document was tweeted out last week by Monahan, who said it had previously been deleted.
