Lady Gaga Opens MTV VMA Awards with Career Retrospective, New Song ‘Applause’

Lady Gaga opened the 2013 MTV VMA awards, and there was no meat dress. Just Gaga wearing a big ol’ block hat.

Performing her new song “Applause” (which was written out in comic sans font in the backdrop), Gaga changed outfits at least four times, each of them corresponding to a particular moment in her short but immense career.

As a reminder, the pop icon has only released two albums and yet she’s doing retrospectives at a major awards ceremony. More power to you, Gaga.
