Oscar Ratings Were Miserable; Sorry, Neil Patrick Harris
Apart from the controversial political statements made during last night’s Oscars, the rest of the ceremony was pure meh, even with a near-naked host — and it reflected in the ratings, which established 2015 as the third least-watched ceremony since the beginning of the 21st century.
Deadline reports that 34.6 million watched the 3.5-hour 87th Annual Academy Awards broadcast, down from the 40.2 million who watched in the same time frame last year when Ellen DeGeneres hosted. The only two less-watched Oscars were in 2008 (32.0 million) and 2003 (33.0 million).
In the 18-49 demographic, the show, hosted this year by Neil Patrick Harris, scored 10.3/27 — “a drop of 14% from the 12.1/29 that the Ellen DeGeneres fronted Oscars pulled in last year.”
The numbers are still coming in, warns Deadline, but they look pretty dismal.
