Rand Paul Vents to MS NOW the US Is ‘Worse Off’ After Trump Launched the Iran War

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) complained the USA is “worse off” by every objective standard than before President Donald Trump launched the Iran War during a Tuesday morning appearance on MS NOW.

“This is a war of choice, and it wouldn’t have been my choice,” Paul told Morning Joe.

He continued:

I think if you look at it objectively, one step forward — we decimated their military —but two steps backwards in that they militarized the Strait [of Hormuz].

The Strait has never been militarized, and I think really, no negotiations go forward until you get a demilitarization of the Strait, and you will still have to negotiate to get any nuclear achievement, despite the military victory. So I think by any objective viewing, we are worse off than we were before the war.

Co-host Willie Geist said many Americans would agree with the senator.

Paul’s interview comes two days after Trump announced that a new deal to end the war is “imminent.” The president said the U.S. would get the two things he has been pushing for the most: a complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a guarantee Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon.

Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One he was ready to launch the “biggest attack since World War II” on Iran, until the country’s theocratic leaders begged him to hold off so a deal could be hammered out.

The Iranians later denied his framing, and Trump fired back that the regime’s leaders were “unbelievably duplicitous.” 

Geist mentioned Paul has been pushing to limit Trump’s commander-in-chief abilities recently, and the senator said the Founding Fathers never wanted one man to have so much power to wage war.

Paul said he would like to see a deal where Iran hands over enriched uranium in exchange for the U.S. lifting trade sanctions.

“I think there is a possibility for peace, but there is some in my party who don’t want any peace and want it to go on until there’s a regime change,” Paul said. “And I think that could be a long time.”
