TV Host Calls Out Audience for Laughing at Male Domestic Violence Victim
During a recent episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show (essentially a British analogue to The Maury Show), the eponymous host had a guest on named Geoff to discuss his relationship with his violent pregnant ex-girlfriend, and to see whether he was the father of the baby. (We told you it was kind of like Maury.)
Geoff described in great detail an episode where he’d been locked in his apartment by the ex, and the only way to escape was to jump off a third-story balcony, prompting the audience to burst into giggles.
“It’s not funny though is it?” Kyle said quickly, hushing the audience. “I don’t want to upset anyone in the audience, because I completely appreciate the fact that you’re here, but I’ll tell you why I don’t think you should laugh: if a woman was sat here and a bloke had locked her in a flat and she’d been forced to jump out, you lot would not be laughing. You would be saying ‘He is a total nightmare, he should be locked up and this is disgraceful.’ But somehow it’s happened to a bloke — it is not funny.”
The chastised audience quickly reversed course and applauded Kyle’s statement.
